The Attorney General's office said the Ennis School District improperly transferred $9 million of property tax money, which was levied to support adult education and transportation, so they could build a new school.
In a written statement, Attorney General Steve Bullock said, "the trustees cannot budget to expend property taxes levied to support the adult education fund from the flex fund to construct a new school."
John Doran, the Communications Officer for the Attorney General told KBZK what happens next is up to the Ennis School District Board, the Madison County Attorney's Office, and the taxpaying citizens of that district.
Doran said any taxpaying citizen could seek legal action against the school board to recover the money to be put back into the adult education and transportation account.
Calls to the Ennis School District and Madison County Attorney's Office were not returned.
