A Bozeman group is already planning care packages for every Montana soldier going overseas this year in hopes of giving them a little piece of home on Christmas Day.
Adopt A Sox fills boxes with candy, playing cards, books, even practical garments made by hand.
It's an exercise in trial and error.
"We're working out how we're going to do it," volunteer Doris Meek said.
Adopt A Sox volunteers test methods, consult each other and sew...and sew...and sew. They sew hundreds of strips of cream colored cloth to create neck coolers.
The neck coolers are filled with little water retaining beads; get it wet and it can provide a soldier with some small relief from the hot desert sun.
The group of ladies, and a man named Joe, have finished about 350 of these brisk bandannas. The goal is to add one to all of this year's 850 packages, so 850 hometown heroes overseas can hold some Montana winter in their hands on Christmas Day.
"It's an amazing feeling to know that you can send something very personal to let them know that we are thinking about them," marketing director Maia Johnson said.
Meek says she'll keep sewing until every soldier is back on American soil.
The group is seeking donations for the packages. Boxes are now set up around Bozeman. Click here to see donation locations or email adoptasox@gmail.com.
